How To Prepare Before Your First Speech
-
Know the Goal: Your first speech is called the Icebreaker. It’s a short (4–6 minute) speech where you introduce yourself to the club—share anything you’d like us to know!
-
Schedule It: Log into Easy-Speak and request a few date options to give your speech. The VP of Education will confirm your speaking date.
-
Use Your Resources: Head to Pathways to explore tips and guidance on structuring your Icebreaker speech.
-
Connect with Your Evaluator: Reach out the week of your speech to get feedback, support, and helpful tips.
-
Ask for Support if Needed: Austin Toastmasters has experienced members happy to help. Contact the VP of Mentorship if you’d like to be connected with a mentor.
-
Relax and Enjoy It: Everyone in the club has been where you are. Don’t stress about being perfect—just be yourself and have fun. We’re all here to support you!

Robert's Rules of Order
At Austin Toastmasters, we follow Robert’s Rules of Order to run efficient and productive meetings. These rules provide structure, ensure equal participation, and help the group make clear decisions without confusion or delay. Read more about Roberts Rules of Order.

Descriptions of Meeting Roles:
Every club meeting runs on member participation. Each role helps make the meeting fun, smooth, and gives everyone a chance to get involved and build leadership skills. Some roles require a minimum amount of speeches, but there are more than enough roles for members with no experience. See full list of rules here and sign up for roles in Easy-Speak.
